Fair and real prices in Pokhara, Nepal 2010

NEPAL A LA CARTE - http://www.nepalalacarte.blogspot.com

Here I will publish, what everybody pays for goods and services in Nepal. Specially tourists should know what a haircut, a public bus, a taxi, a good meal, an appartment, a hotel room and so on really costs. All prices I am checking myself and am keeping them updated every week or so. I want travellers, tourists, pilgrims, volunteer workers, journalists etc. coming to Nepal not to have to pay hundred (and more!) times as much as everybody else here. A friend of mine paid 30 Euros instead of the usual 0,20 Euros for a 30 minute trip uphill from Pokhara to the villages of Kristi (http://www.aschoolforkristi.blogspot.com/). What I found out so far after coming here since 1989: You have to KNOW the price of what You want to buy. That sounds simple. And it is : ) - Otherwise, You certainly will pay mooore, toooooo much mooore ;-(

Some easy examples as a starter:

HAIRCUT at touristic lakeside including 45 minute massage: 0,25 EURO

A GOOD MEAL in a local restaurant (Daal Bhat = lentils with rice, pickles, cauliflower, onions, garlic, chilli, potatoes, carrots & more "All You Can Eat"): 0,50 - 0,60 EURO

LOCAL BUS: 0,10 - 0,14 EURO

APPARTMENT including water, electricity and hot shower (monthly rent): 12,00 - 15,00 EURO

A splendid GOLDEN nose piercing for just 5,00 Euro at Ganga's. Louise can tell You ;-)) - I can tell You: She's very HAPPY with it : ) http://www.hahajuhu.blogspot.com/

GUESTHOUSE (for example PUN HILL GUESTHOUSE):
1,50 - 3,00 Euro in very nice, light, clean, large and very cosy & comfortable rooms including bathtub and with really great views on Mount Machapuchere and Annapurna II. Nice people like Bhim Kumari Pun, Sangita and Sarita who will take good care of You. Tasty food from the own garden. Try Sangita's vegetable curry on rice. Or ask for the brandnew organically grown nepali coffee from farmer Bishow Bandhu in Bayali on the green hills above Pokhara (http://www.himalcoffee.blogspot.com/). Pun Hill Guesthouse offers seven large rooms. A garden. A lovely garden restaurant. A rooftop garden. Two lovely balkonies with prayer flags to relax. In the direct neighbourhood there are a couple of shops. 300 meters walking distance to entertaining and relaxin' Lakeside : ) - Just come and enjoy :-)) You'll never forget it :-))) ...

...with all kinds of restaurants, bars, boats You need for an easygoing stay in the "Garden City" of Nepal.

A six to seven hour TOURIST BUS TRIP from Pokhara to Kathmandu (200 Km) with OPEN HEART TRAVEL: 3,50 Euro (take the front seat on the left hand side - I call it the "president's seat" ;-)) - Super fantastic views!

For the same price (3,50 Euro) You can take WORLD WIDE TRAVEL or BLUE SKY TRAVEL & TOURS

A BOAT ON THE "LAKE WITH A VIEW" ON THE HIMALAYAS: 1,25

Euro per hour including "driver"! ONLY at FISH TAIL LODGE (FTL) at Pokhara Lakeside (at the very beginning of Lakeside left hand side wonderfully located with superview on the whole length of Fewa Lake ; ))

Other places to rent a boat along the lake between 2,00 Euro

...and 5,00 Euro (all day). It's really great fun and veeeery relaxin' ; )

Aaaaaaaaaaand You'll feel like... - I have no idea ; )

PRAYERFLAGS, THE BIG ONES (15 cm x 20 cm), FIVE ROLLS IN A BIG PACKAGE: 4,00 Euro.

A good MILK COW: 150,00 - 200,00 Euro
A goat: 25,00 - 30,00 Euro

1 KG raddish: 0,15 Euro
1 KG potatoes: 0,20 Euro
1 KG Oranges: 0,25 Euro

A big truckload of sand for construction: 16,00 Euro
A brick: 0,03 - 0,05 Euro
A bigger block: 0,20 Euro

50 KG cement: 4,50 Euro

My experience is: If You want to support nepali people, children, students, go and buy the stuff yourself. Do not give the money to anyone else. It will not go to the people You want it to go. Donate directly, again: go to the market and buy the stuff Yourself! That's the only way it works!

A school uniform: 2,50 Euro
School fee for Private Schools: 3,00 - 4,00 Euro per month
Admission fee (annually): 20,00 - 25,00 Euro

Government Schools are free of charge, have poorer education services.
